The ABIOS technology is based on many years of experience in the development and application of a diagnostic system for competitive athletes (HRV-Coaching, 2001) and the extension of the application for the health sector (Cardio24, 2012). The basic technology is a result of the analysis of heart rate (pulse) and heart rate variability (HRV).
Over many years of use and further development of the technology, essential information and data could be obtained and incorporated into the implementation of a modern application. Algorithms, a mobile software solution (app) and a web platform provide users with information on their vital status, load, stress and recovery level.
The development of the technology led to the foundation of ABIOS GmbH in 2015. With the ABIOS – Algorithmic BIOdata System it was possible to raise the basic technology to a new level and to develop additional solutions with a competent IT and science team.
ABIOS is now able to provide its customers and partners a platform where they can access existing solutions for mobile (app) bio- and sensor data collection and a clear web portal. In addition, the existing service can be amended with customized solutions and linked via APIs . Further, it can also be designed as a stand-alone application.
We would like to briefly present an extract of our main areas of application below…
Sport teams und professional athletes use the method to monitor training and success in competition. Athletes can check their recovery level by daily morning measurements (3-4min) while lying down. The data is automatically transferred to a web portal, where trainers can immediately view the status of their athletes and adjust the training accordingly. In the case of conspicuous results, a long-term measurement is usually carried out, where athletes then monitor their degree of stress and recovery during and between training sessions. In this way it can be ensured that training only takes place when it makes sense and at the right intensity. Athletes can also do a sleep measurement and thereby obtain even more information about their degree of recovery.
A live tracking function enables the trainers to carry out real-time monitoring even over long distances. Users can make their data available to coaches via a security code. Users and trainers can exchange biodata and optimize an activity (training etc.). This is especially important for athletes who are e.g. in a training camp and whose coaches cannot be present. This way, trainers can accompany their athletes virtually from home and intervene immediately in the event of irregularities.
Health consultants, therapists and physicians use the ABIOS procedures for client care. With short-term measurements (3min), eg in a session, counsellors can very easily record the current stress level and vital status of their clients. Long-term measurements allow them to get a deeper insight into the daily routine or the sleep situation. Through the measurements the clients can see for themselves how they are doing. They can release the data for their consultants, so that they can see at first glance how their clients were doing, if GPS was actived they can see where the stress or relaxation was greatest and through the activity function what the users were doing or how they felt subjectively.
For company health programs, diagnostics provide employees as well as management with important information on supportive actions during change processes. In this way, employees could check where their stress is greatest, carry out changes themselves, or if necessary, call on professional help. The company management can optimise the working environment and increase employee satisfaction and well-being by using data and statistical parameters provided “voluntarily” by the employees and anonymised by ABIOS.
In care institutions such as retirement homes etc. ABIOS provides important information on the degree of well-being of for example very elderly people who can hardly or no longer articulate themselves.Hinweise zum Wohlfühlgrad bei z.B. hochbetagten Personen, die sich kaum oder gar nicht mehr artikulieren können.
For example, people suffering from dementia (stage 7 after Reisberg) can be monitored how they react to various pieces of music, massages, meals, visits and other daily things. In this way daily routine and many small things can be adapted also without direct feedback. Biodata collected and processed via ABIOS give the care personnel and their relatives the opportunity to communicate with the patients.
Another area of application for diagnostics is the use in media. A software solution has emerged from a collaboration with the Red Bull Media House (since 2017), which we now make available to other institutions. The user can record his biodata during various activities (e.g. extreme sport events), collect many additional parameters and synchronize them with videos via the ABIOS media app. If required, the data can be edited via the ABIOS web portal, optionally completed with generic data streams and exported as a synchronized data package, adjusted to the time stamps of videos. A comfortable export function makes it possible to export the data as CSV in media appropriate resolution (frame rate 1-60Hz). In this way, a cutter or graphic designer can easily add relevant and excititng data to videos.

Full-stack and established processes
With our already established full-stack solutions we can start and complete projects very quickly. Normally we are able to start programming and testing on the first day of a new project. This saves a lot of development and setup time.
Large amounts of data are not processed at once (upload, calculations, etc…), but in manageable sizes and bit by bit to avoid overloading the system (CPU, RAM). Thus new inquiries can be answered at any time.
Time series databases
Efficient use of time series databases that can store large amounts of data and still have a very high insertion and query rate. Handling of rolling releases and updates.
Continous Integration und Continous Deployment
We have already built a continuous integration and continuous deployment pipeline. New code is automatically checked and provided in a test system where the testers can immediately check the new features. This requires an extensive infrastructure of build servers and automated Android testing.
Adding new calculations to time series
If a new step in the processing of (bio-)sensor data is required, it can be easily added and does not require extensive refactoring.
Display of time series data for end users
Using our web portal, we have acquired the knowledge of how to present time series data to end users in a way that they can be understood. With our existing library, we can easily present time series data and data management for a new project.

Over the years we had to adapt our measurement system to the latest smartphones, various measurement devices and different Bluetooth versions. This applies to both BLE and Bluetooth Classic.
Uploading sensor data from devices
Whether embedded devices, Android smartphones or desktop PCs, we have developed proven methods for measuring, caching, storing and uploading sensor data.
Many other application areas are possible – as already implemented several times for customers, we also realize interface or IT customized solutions.
